Question by Martin E. · Aug 20, 2014 at 02:13 AM ·

Deployment Automation: Chef, Puppet, Ansible - Which one do you use?

Hi,

are you using Chef, Puppet or Ansible (or others) to automatically deploy your systems?

Did you move to another solution (e.g. from Chef to Puppet or Puppet to Ansible)? If so, why?

Thanks and best regards, Martin

Ansible, Chef and Puppet resources for Dynatrace installations are available here:

  • https://github.com/dynatrace/Dynatrace-Chef
  • https://github.com/dynatrace/Dynatrace-Puppet

If you get to use them, please provide some feedback.

Hi,

We used Chef for agent deployment on app servers. Basically every new (windows) server being built by Chef will have dynatrace agents setup on it.

On windows we set the environment variable to disable the agent and enable it when we are ready to instrument the application. App teams likes this control on instrumentation like they enable/disable features in their app.

The part where we are struggling is with agents on Linux server. Agents on linux servers cannot be disabled or enabled like windows, so we setup agents manually after code deployment.

we have an RFE RFE: Feature to enable/disable java agents submitter for this feature

Hello,

We use Puppet to deploy agents. And we prepare the Servers and the collectors.

Did you have a chance to work on it already?

Would be nice to hear from you - I saw your Update on the blog... and I was with Jari yesterday and we briefly talked about that.

Hello Mathieu,

thanks for providing your feedback. Unfortunately, the resource that was working on Chef and Puppet had to move on to other priorities.

We are expecting contributions from the community but they will most probably not be in a shareable state.

So much for now, will keep you posted on this page.
