Question by Rajesh S. · Jan 29, 2015 at 08:08 PM ·

Is it okay to refresh the Dynatrace Services?

We are running Dynatrace 6.0 with Medium sizing on production application server with 16GB RAM.We have around 70+ BTs.

The DT Frontend Server and Dynatrace server 6 run on same machine and collector on other.

I see that there is around 7-9GB of RAM being used but after few days the RAM usage goes on increasing and the responsiveness of Front-end Client degrades.

We do manually stop and start of services (DT Collector, DT Front end, DT Server, DT web server) end of each day and it seems good work-around for increasing responsiveness of front end.

I wanted to know is it safe to do this?

Thanks in advance.

N.B. I mean separate machine, not production app server.

Focusing on just the host where the Dynatrace Server and Frontend Server are located:

  • You can disable the Web Server Agent service
  • If you are not using that host for the collector for your agents you can disable the Collector service
  • If there's nothing else hosted on that box, consider upping your memory setting from medium to large to see if that helps?  Business Transactions and their impact on the server performance can be hard to measure, even if you think your traffic/load aligns more with the medium description

To answer your question, though, you should be perfectly safe doing service stop/start whenever.  The graceful shutdowns will stop the session recording, end the sessions with the clients, and disconnect from the database, and the upstream components (agents and collectors) can buffer data until the services come back up.

Hope that helps,

Rick B

Thank you Rick for detailed answer.

We are planning to augment the hardware as soon as we get UEM.
