But they are as old as October 2012. So they get accessed only when needed or how does it work?
They are only updated when there is new/updated inheritance information from your loaded java / .NET Code. If your application doesnt change significantely we wont update these IMAP Files as they are still accurate.
Which version of dynatrace do you run? in recent versions we implemented cleanup tasks for imaps that are no longer used or outdated

Yes - these represent our "Inheritance Map" - hence - IMAP. Our collector needs this for correct instrumentation. This inheritance map is built-up by analyzing byte-code of your applications. we keep record of the full inheritance hierarchy of your applications.
Please keep them there - otherwise you could break correct code instrumentation
