Does the query "dynaTraceMonitor" manage correctly the security of Web Server?

The UEM Agent sends back monitoring details, to dynaTrace Server, via the specific HTTP request /dynaTraceMonitor.

How does the query /dynaTraceMonitor manage the security of Web Server?

Does the query /dynaTraceMonitor get all session cookies of the monitored Application?

Does the query /dynaTraceMonitor manage correctly NTLM challenge?

...

Thanks

Jerome

Hi Jerome,

  • How does the query /dynaTraceMonitor manage the security of Web Server?
The monitor signal is picked up by the web server agent and not by the dynaTrace server directly
  • Does the query /dynaTraceMonitor get all session cookies of the monitored Application?
Yes, but I would capture all the values on the serverside as it is easier to capture the values there.
  • Does the query /dynaTraceMonitor manage correctly NTLM challenge?
    See first question.

Cheers Klaus

Klaus,

We currently have our java application servers instrumented but not our HTTP servers and we're getting errors similar to KB-464 Requests to dtagent_XXX.js and dynaTraceMonitor result in a - 404 Not Found as the UEM signals come through our servlet layer.

If we instrumented our HTTP servers, would the UEM signals be captured & stop there, thereby eliminating those errors? Is that the recommended configuration?

Hi Jason,

If you instrument the Web server the dynaTraceMonitor Signal will be captured by this agent and not forwarded. It will also give you more visibility as you get data from the Web server as well.

Thanks again Klaus.

This relationship between UEM & web server agents was not clear to us. Since our HTTP servers don't do very much we didn't think we needed to instrument them, especially since UEM seemed to be working correctly. It wasn't until we experienced greater load that Incidents were triggered.

Luckily we are entitled to web server agents so we will install them to correct our situation.

It might be a good idea to reinforce the need for web server agents for future UEM customers.
