How to export DT Dashboards with all the Dashlets

How to export Dashboards with all the Dashlets along with Business Transactions and Measures? What is the ideal way to do all these in one shot without exporting each one separately? Does DT has any scripts or quick way to promote apps from different environment such as DEV to QA/PROD etc?

BTs and Measures are contained in the System Profile, Dashlets are contained in Dashboards. So you need to transfer these two. Both can be exported to XML via right click on the system profile and "Export System Profile" and choosing "Dashboard -> Save as...".

Then you can import these two on the other environment.

Automation

Both steps can be automated:

  • A support-archive from the Dynatrace Server contains all these files as well, so this is an easy way to download all the items via a REST call in one go, see the REST documentation for details.
  • For automated installation in the target environment, you can build a so called FastPack which contains the system profiles and dashboards together with a plugin.xml file, see e.g. the Hybris FastPack for a nice example of how this looks like. If you zip up the files into a .dtp file, then you can double click it to install it via the Dynatrace Client. Or choose "Tools -> Manage Plugins -> Install Plugin". If you want to go all the way with automating the steps, you can even install a plugin via REST

Things to be aware of:

  • The Dashboard may contain references to server-names and other things that are local to the specific Dynatrace installation, you can avoid some of these by adjusting the Dashboards to use "Dashboard Location" in Dashboard->Properties->Source, but you might need to do some replacements.
