This is the bootstrap agent, which is a lightweight library that does some initialization functions before loading another library for the technology-specific functions of monitoring. In your installation directory you'll see "libdtagentcore.so" which is for Java, and others which map to versions of Apache and PHP. One of the jobs of libdtagent.so is to load/update the appropriate agent library for you. Does that make sense?
Just to add what Richard correctly said: In theory you could just install libdtagent.so as it will connect to the Collector and then download the correct agent version that matches your current server installation. In our agent installer we however pre-install the different technology specific agent libraries so that not all of your machines have to download the technology specific agents from the Collector during the first connect
