Is it possible to detect existing java environment variables?

I'm so sorry if this answer is somewhere and I haven't found it yet, but. . . .

We have a fairly decent sized java shop. Long ago, in our evolution of java application development and middleware administration, we standardized on some custom environment variables to help us categorize/identify Java processes. Now we have Dynatrace. I want to use our existing java environment variables, but can't figure out how to do it. I understand we can create yet another java environment variable called DT_CUSTOM_PROPS, but I don't need those. I have everything I need already defined in existing environment variables. Is there some way I can "tell" the OneAgent or Dynatrace to look for these specific custom properties and display the name/value pair in the "properties and tags" section?

@Melissa H. were you able to have the JS properties populate in Dynatrace? if so what did you do to accomplish this?
