Dynatrace OneAgent support for java agents on mainframe

Is there a plan to support monitoring of Websphere JVMs on mainframe for Dynatrace Managed, like what is being done in Dynatrace AppMon today?

IRRC, there is no definite plan yet on when it will be supported. But Java on zOS is already scheduled as one of the topics to explore once the EAP concludes and GA arrives.

Thanks. Is there a way to create a RFE on this item?

Sure, you can post an idea in the Dynatrace Product idea forum.

Now that EAP is here, do you have any installation documentation? Specifically interested to understand where the Zlocal will run? Is this similar to Open Systems? If so, will the agent be remotely managed or ZLOCAL install similar to CICS or IMS

Hi Daniel,

Please refer to the official documentation for the Java Code Module for zOS

Hello @harald_berger

Is there work in progress for the following updates to the zOS Java agent?

Java z/OS services are provided for

  • IBM MQ
  • JMS

Supported metric categories

  • Performance monitoring infrastructure (PMI)
  • Java management extensions (JMX)
  • Garbage collection
  • Java heap

Custom Services

  • Ability to create custom services for specific entry points, like we can in AppMon zOS and Dynatrace distributed Java

Hi,

Please mind that this agent is a very lightwight agent and not full fledged substitute for the OneAgent or classic AppMon agent.

MQ support (put/get calls) and basic JMX/PMI metrics for memory pools / GC is already there. Because of its lightwight nature, the agent does not receive any runtime config from the backend/cluster. So custom services or custom metrics are not possible.

regards

Harry

Is "MQ MDB" part of MQ support?

Hi,

There is no specific support for Message Driven Beans itself. But as communication happens via MQ/JMS the workflow is shown.

Best

Harry
