When installing the client and connecting to the server, do the client and server versions always need to match?
Example: An employee downloaded client version 3.5; our production DT server is on 4.1; she was unable to connect and was told to download version 4.1 because obviously 3.5 was out of date.
I'm also confused, because on update (we're about to upgrade our server from 4.1 to 4.2); I've been told that all users connected to the DT server will be prompted to upgrade to client version 4.2 upon connecting.
Why is it that user on 3.5 was not prompted to upgrade to 4.1?
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Roman,
Does the automatic update for clients still work between minor releases? I am upgrading from 6.0 - 6.2?
Thanks,
Eric Eiswerth
Actually no, looking back at my answer from almost 3 years ago I am not sure this was ever the case. 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2 all can be installed side-by-side and AFAIK the client will not automatically update.

Hi Eric,
Automatic update for clients works between minor releases (https://apmcommunity.compuware.com/community/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=68649173) and for installed fix packs. If you upgrade to a new major version you will need a matching client to connect, either by installing them or easier by using the web start option of the dynaTrace server.
When you upgrade the server to 4.2 the users will be asked to update the client so it matches the server. That also means you will no longer be able to connect to 4.1 servers with this client instance. If your environment requires a user to connect to 4.1 and 4.2 instances at the same time please install the 2 client versions side-by-side or again use the web start clients from the respective servers.
Best, Roman
Does the same apply for the "viewers", you need a 4.1 viewer for 4.1 .dts files? Or is there some 'backwards compatibility' there?
