We installed collectors on 6 remote windows server machines. Along with the collector installation, host monitoring agents were also installed.
So I created a new profile called "Host Monitoring Profile" with one agent group with the name of "host", so all of them would map into it.
After I restarted the collectors, the agents mapped to the profile, but the error we recieved was strange.
We have over 40 windows enterprise licenses free, so how come we're getting this error?
Thanks,
PJ

Hi PJ,
The host monitoring agent is separate. I believe the license you have available maps to WOSIs with monitored .net processes on them.
WOSI?
So we would have to convert some of our Windows Server agents to host monitoring agents? Or is this a separate purchase?
PJ,
(WOSI == Windows Operating System Instance)
The 40 WOSI licenses you have are for .NET agents, monitoring your .NET apps on those 40 servers. As it turns out, the .NET agent (and the Java agent) have Host agent capabilities built into them, so you would get the Host monitoring metrics "for free" on servers that have .NET or Java agents installed.
However, the standalone Host agents (the thing you installed on the collector servers) are separately licensed agents. This allows people to gather those host metrics on servers that are not being monitored as app servers. So in your case you would need 6 host agent licenses if you want to monitor the OS stats on those 6 collector servers.

Thanks Rob. Now I know that WOSI is not a StarWars character.
Can the WOSI licenses be converted to host agent licenses? Or is that something I need to ask of our sales contacts?
PJ
Are you not using the 40 .NET licenses? If not then best I can suggest is to work with your sales critters as you suggest. However you may want to consider just adding host licenses to your purchase, if you have a number of standalone servers you want to monitor (servers with no monitored application). My understanding (though I'm not an expert on pricing) is that those are inexpensive, perhaps even sold in bundles (like 25-packs or something).
At any rate, your best next steps are to contact your sales team for whatever you want to do with adding host licenses.
