Question by Ruju G. · Jun 17, 2015 at 08:22 PM · business transaction

Use real "User Action" as the splitting as against User Action including variable DOM elements

Context: We are building DynaTrace Business Transaction and in turn a Dashboard so as to measure User Action performance trends over time

Specific Business Transaction Use Case & Problem Statement:

  1. Following (a) are the User Action PurePaths that are captured when user selects various different options from a list on the Web Page (b).
  2. Per the application behavior the same underlying business action is performed, just with a different data input. From a Business Transaction perspective it's the same user behavior and hence needs to be treated as the "same" action as against how dT UEM treats them as different
  3. Attempted looking at the Splitting options that BT provides so as to be able to club these operations under the same User Action so as to aggregate and trend statistics over time, but none of the options worked out
  4. To reiterate the key here is to treat the User Action as same even though Web UI has different user data specific options listed. To take an analogy, in a eMail utility like GMail/Outlook, every email is a different object and UEM shall treat opening of each as a different User Action, but from a user's perspective its the same action and we should trend/compare performance independent of the specific email
  5. A potential way would be to hint dT UEM BT to look into the DOM structure and treat items of a list as same User Action

FWIW, I did surface this as a requirement to one of the Dynatrace Professional Services Coach during a session we had and there didn't appear to be a quick solution either, however, from a business use case perspective it appears to be something potentially every client would need, hence possibly is already built in, just that I am unable to identify the way to do it and hence the post above.

If sharing a Saved/Exported Session of sample User Action PurePaths helps, do let me know and I can do so too.

Hi Ruju,

have you tried creating a user action business transaction where the filter is a web request URI pattern measure, singling out those web requests that these clicks provoke? It should be possible to get the combined user action response time trend like that.

This only works if you have server side paths attached to the user actions, though. A session file would indeed help, so that we can give concrete recommendations. Thanks,

best regards,

Peter
