Question by Josep C. · Jan 14, 2019 at 05:03 PM · 6.5 agent java collector dotnet 7.2 migration apache

Agent migration

Hi all,

we've migrated our Dynatrace AppMon Server from 6.5 to 7.2. The migrations was without upgrade the agent version so, all agents remain in 6.5 versión.

Now we want to do the agent upgrade from 6.5 to 7.2 but we want to do that in a gradual basis (per agent group for example) and with confidence (with a rollback procedure), so how can we do that?

We've thousands of agents in hundreds of agent groups and system profiles, so what we want was start migrating one of these agent groups, try all functionalities and, if we've any problem with the new version, rollback all agents in the agent group to the 6.5 version.

Thanks in advance!

One option is to disable automatic updates (as mentioned by Sebastian), then manually upgrade a small set of agents for a single app or single agentGroup. Manual upgrades can be completed by uninstalling/reinstalling the agent on the selected hosts. Complete your verification procedure. Once you have a necessary level of confidence, then re-enable automatic updates and let the rest of the agents update automatically.

This was missing on my mind :) I wasn't sure that reinstallation is mandatory in such case. I'll remember. Thx!

We are doing some test for do a rollback from version 7.2 to version 6.5 in a lab environment, for do that, we delete all the files associated with the agent in .../agent/conf path, but it still starts with version 7.2 after restarting the service.

We also try to stop collector first, delete downloads directory and restart all again, but it doesnt work.

Do you know which files we should clean for do the rollback?

If collector is 7.2 and autoupdate is turned on, everytime agent will be started as 7.2 because first action will be update.

Did you reinstall agent? Or just clear afent/conf?

Discussing it with Josep, we see that if you have 2 different installation folders, you can swap version changing the conf file, but if you use the REST API functionality, the new version is downloaded to agent/downloads and we can't do the rollback.

In this second scenario (updating using REST API), we try clearing this paths:

agent/conf

agent/downloads

C:\ProgramData\Dynatrace\AppMon\agent\conf\runtime\agentName

I suppose that it takes the last agent version used from some conf file, but we don't know which one.

Hello, if you have migrated Dynatrace Server and Collectors, agents will upgrade automatically after application restart. You can disable automatic agent updated in server settings. I’m not sure how to force particular agent group to upgrade than
