Alert with Calculated metric

Hello,

We have some reports that show some calculated metrics (like total time of some transaction steps). Now the management wants to have alerts that are triggered if those calculated values exceed some predefined thresholds. However in the alerting page I can only see Metric and Compound Metric.

Anyone know how to raise alerts based on calculated values? please share your solutions.

Thanks,

Hiep.

Hello,

I have good news regarding this problem. Dynatrace NAM 18.0.2 has been released and starting from this version, it is possible to create alert covering your scenario. Alert's definition may look like this:

1. Dimensions and metrics:

2. Compound metric:

3. Output filter

Please, let me know if it is sufficient solution for your problem.

Best Regards

Jacek

Hi Jacek,

In fact the Compound metric is available in release 2018 and I tried to use the same but it did not work.

I will try to see if I can test this with SP2.

Thanks,

Hiep.

Hiep,

Thank you, I really don't know how I missed that yesterday.

Your report is quite special, we need some more time to analyze problem thoroughly. Please, expect update from me next week.

Hello Hiep,

Thank you for patience, the analysis took us a little bit more time than I expected.

Right now alerts mechanism does not support functions like data_sum() which you used in presented report. However it is limitation which we're going to remove, our plan is to add suuport for such functions in alerts.

I will share information about version supporting those functions as soon as decisions are made.

Best Regards

Jacek

Hiep,

Could you also attach definition of your DMI report, please? It will help in analysis a lot.

Thank you

Jacek

Hello Hiep,

In general, Compounds metrics feature has been designed just for handling cases like you described.

Could you please attach example report with your calculated metric? That will allow me to analyze the case and provide more detailed answer how to deal with the problem.

BTW. Which version of Dynatrace NAM you use? 20018?

Best Regards

Jacek

Hello Jacek,

I tried Compound metrics but not successful, maybe I was using wrong expression.

I attach a report with this comment. You will find 6 sections in the report, for 3 transactions (2 sections for 1 transaction)

- 1 section shows so-called Total transaction time (which, actually, is sum of Operation time of all transaction steps, and it is a calculated result (sum <Operation time with breakdown>))

- 1 section shows the steps of the transaction. (the screenshot below shows a simple example of 1 transaction that has only 2 steps, but we have other transactions that have many more steps)

I don't know how to add the same calculated result to an alert.

Please take a look and advise.

Many thanks,
