We're currently using one Agent Manager and one Child AM. When adding a new Agent, I can choose which of the 2 Agent Managers to use. However later on I can't edit any of the choices, i.e. on all the Edit Active Agent windows the option to select an Agent Manager is greyed out and cannot be changed. Am I missing something obvious here?

That is the way the product works. If you need to reassign the agent to a new Agent Manager you will need to delete the agent and then add the agent back. The reason for this is that the agent needs to be properly disconnected from the old Agent Manager.

we had the same situation in 2014. Not only we had to delete the agent in the agent manager. We also had to change a configuration file on the agent it self:
1. Stop the agent service
2. Open: C:\Program Files (x86)\Compuware\Private Enterprise\Agent\Config\fxsrvaccws\Configuration.xml öffnen
3. Change Tag<AgentManagerConfig><MachineName><![CDATA[<AM-NAME>]]></MachineName> to the new agent manager
5. restart the agent service
