Custom dashboard ownership change, impossible?

gary_neal

According to Dynatrace support and documentation/notes only the owner of a dashboard has control of who can edit. This poses a a problems as we have a number of dashboards that have been created by a dynatrace user who has left Dynatrace and we now have dashboards which some we wish to change i.e. edit, change to access but don't have access to do this or just remove/delete them which only the owner can.

It was suggested the clone them, but this would mean we have the access to new ones, but the old ones will still remain.

Our concern is, if this is the general case that even if you are the admin, the dashboard owner has better control than admin. So if the owner person has gone and you don't have access to the account there appears no way to clean up.

Any advice appreciated.

Isn't possible for you to take control of this emploee email, reset password in dynatrace, and change everything you need?

Regards, Sebastian

Even if an administrator can, that is not really the answer to this. I have never encountered software where you are expected to be a full administrator yet at the same time not have full control over something as simple as dashboards. Come on Dynatrace, I expect much better from you on something like this. I don't think we are asking for the world here. Maybe add it as another checkbox for roles, but administrators need the ability to all options of any dashboards in their environment.

No as I don't work for Dynatrace so no can do

You don't have to work in dynatrace, you have to reset password to account on tenant which is correlated to email of your former employee, log in and delete those dashboards. (after cloning them).

@Larry R. I know it's not proper solution for such situation but it's the only one I have in mind for now.

Good work around suggestions 🙂 This one just really frustrates me as it should be something very simple to add to Dynatrace.

I could not agree with you more. To not allow full blown environment administrators to have 100% complete control over dashboards is a severe miss that needs to be addressed ASAP.

Hi Gary,

One way to do this is to add users and give them editing permissions to created custom Dashboards while logged in with the Dashboard Owner's account.

Have attached Doc containing these steps for your reference.give-editing-rights-for-dynatrace-dashboards-to-ot.docx

Since you are not able to get hold of that account, check with your Admin and see if they have deleted the user account or not. If yes, checking with DT Support might be your final option.

All the best.

Vivek

problem is I can't log in with the dashboards account. In this case it's a Dynatrace account and that person has left and I'm not a Dynatrace employee. I did contact DT support but they couldn't help. Might have to escalate this with DT more

I have edit access to a dashboard created by someone else but they have left the organization. What would happen if their account is disabled after sometime (which usually is the next step)? Isn't it possible to take the ownership entirely?

Also, even if you clone them, the dashboard URL changes (which is distributed to the monitoring team). For multiple dashboards, it would be really chaotic to clone and share those again.

Hi all,

I ran across this use case myself today and found out, that there's been some evolution in Dynatrace and as of today it is possible to change the owner of the dashboard using Dashboards API

Tested both in lab (Managed) and production (SaaS) environments and it works as expected.

Thanks a lot, @Mike_Kristofic, for the update! :thankyou:

Keep calm and build Community!

Also, you can change it by going to configure then Dashboard JSON then change owner. I have done this many times.
