Difference between One Agent and Azure Dynatrace Extensions

venkata_s_matta

Hi

I would like to know the difference between the One Agent installation and Azure Dynatrace Extension Installation on Azure VMs.

Did we miss any full stack options if we installed one agent as an Azure Dynatrace extension on the Azure VMs?

or how it will work in terms of licensing if we install the Azure Dynatrace extension on the Azure VMs.

Regards,
Venkat

For Azure VM's there's no difference in the agent capabilities when installed directly into the VM or via the Azure extension.  The extension just automates the installation of the agent, it behaves the same, uses the same licensing.

The Azure extension is helpful as it will automatically install the agent as VM's scale up/down in a VM Scale Set, for non-scale set VM's there's no real difference as they're static.

Extensions are small applications that provide post-deployment configuration and automation on Azure virtual machines (VMs). The Azure platform hosts many extensions covering VM configuration, monitoring, security, and utility applications. Publishers take an application, wrap it into an extension, and simplify the installation. All you need to do is provide mandatory parameters.
